W FOR WIMPY

The Vickers Wellington was the workhorse of RAF Bomber Command. Less well-known than its more glamorous relation the Avro Lancaster, more Wellingtons were produced than any other British bomber and it served in every theatre from the first to the last days of the Second World War. Beloved and respected by its crews for its character, rugged endurance and versatility, the aircraft was nicknamed the Wimpy, after the famous Popeye character.

W For Wimpy is the second volume of stories centred on a wartime RAF Bomber station, focusing on the many men and women whose work revolved around the aircraft which flew night after night to occupied Europe. Flyers, groundcrews, admin staff and spud bashers feature in these human stories of bravery, endurance, fear and love, and at the centre of each story is the Wimpy.
